Leading bookmaker Betfair are offering readers an enhanced 8/1 on Toronado winning the Breeders' Cup Mile on Saturday and we're backing the European raider to land the contest.
Goldikova is the only European raider to have won the Breeders' Cup Mile in recent times but there looks a strong trans-Atlantic challenge at Santa Anita this term and Toronado is a percentage pick.
Richard Hannon's ultra-consistent four-year-old has already claimed a couple of Group 1 triumphs in England, winning last season's Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and this term's Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The son of High Chaparral put in another solid effort when chasing home Kingman in July and the form of his Prix du Moulin second to Charm Spirit at Longchamp was franked when that victor followed up in the Champion Stakes.
Toronado travels strongly in his races and has the ability to do it from the front or behind, so Richard Hughes should be able to give him a smooth ride around Santa Anita's tight turns.
Harry Herbert, racing manager to owners Al Shaqab, has issued a positive update on the colt's well-being from California and everything looks in place for a bold bid.
“The horse seems very well," said Herbert after watching him do a light canter. "Sean Levey, who rides him every day, says the horse has never been better.
"He has had a relatively light campaign this year as the owners also have Olympic Glory and we have kept the two of them apart. He has got a good draw (stall 5) and that gives his jockey options in the race. These races take a lot of winning, but we are hopeful going into Saturday.”
